The prestigious Lokmanya Tilak National Award has been announced to Ms. Sudha Murty

 

Pune – (The Karbhari News Service) –  The Prestigious Lokmanya Tilak National Award has been declared to the renowned social activist, writer and Rajya Sabha Member (MP) Ms. Sudha Murty on Tuesday. The award, presented by the Lokmanya Tilak Smarak Trust, recognizes her contributions to rural development, literature and social work.

The Trustees of the Tilak Smarak Trust selected Murty unanimously, highlighting her efforts aligned with Lokmanya Tilak’s principles of Swadeshi and human development. Dr. Rohit Tilak, The Trustee, announced the award at a press conference on Saturday.

The award ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 1, the 104th death anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak, at Maharashtra Sadan, New Delhi at 6:00 P.M. Hon. Shri. Sharad Pawar, President of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar Group), MP Dr. Shahu Chhatrapati Maharaj and former Kerala Home Minister Shri. Ramesh Chennithala will be present for the function. The ceremony will be conducted by Hon. Dr. Deepak J. Tilak, Chairman of the Trust.

This year marks the 42nd presentation of the Lokmanya Tilak National Award, which includes a memento and a cash prize of one lakh rupees. During the event, a coffee table book titled ‘Legendary Lokmanya,’ authored by Dr. Pranati Rohit Tilak will be released. The book features important events and rare photographs from Lokmanya Tilak’s life.

Since 1983, the Lokmanya Tilak National Award has honoured individuals for their selfless services to the nation. Mr. S. M. Joshi was the first recipient of this prestigious award. Many renowned personalities across various fields were honoured with this award, to name a few, Late. Smt. Indira Gandhi, Late. Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Shri. G. Madhavan Nair, Shri. Kotta Harinarayana, Dr. Tessy Thomas, Dr. K. Sivan, Dr. A. Svathanu Pillai, Dr. Subbaih Arunan, Dr. E. Sreedharan, Shri. Baba Kalyani, Shri. Rahul Bajaj, Dr. Cyrus Poonawala, Smt. Godavari Parulekar, Smt. Sudhatai Joshi, Dr. Vikas and Dr. Prakash Amte, Dr. Manmohan Singh, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who received the award last year.

Sudha Murty, Co-founder of the Infosys Foundation, has significantly contributed to various social sectors. She has been instrumental in rural development, literature, and social work. Her literary works in Marathi, Kannada, and English include over nine novels and several story collections. Murthy has received numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

Sudha Murty was born on August 19, 1950, in Shigaon, Karnataka. She is married to N.R. Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys. Sudha Murty holds a B.E. in Electrical Engineering, a gold medalist and a Master’s in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Science. She started her career as an engineer, becoming the first woman to work for Tata Motors. She has also served as a professor and visiting professor at various institutions.

Her notable social initiatives include establishing libraries in Karnataka schools, creating the ‘Murty Classical Library of India’ at Harvard University, and constructing around 10,000 toilets in rural Karnataka. She also provided special services during the Tsunami in Tamil Nadu and the Andaman Islands.

The Lokmanya Tilak National Award highlights Murty’s enduring contributions to society and her dedication to national development.
