Water budget submitted by Municipal Corporation to Water Resources Department | 20.90 TMC of water demanded for Pune city
PMC Water Budget | Assuming the inclusion of 34 villages in the Pune Municipal Corporation and the population increasing every year, i.e. assuming a population of 72 lakh, the city will now require 20.90 TMC of water. The Pune Municipal Corporation has made this demand by submitting the water budget (PMC Pune Water Budget 2023-24) to the Department of Water Resources. At present 14.61 TMC of water is being supplied to the city by the Water Resources Department. It will be important to see how much the water resources department will approve the water quota. According to the proposal of the Municipal Corporation, the annual water budget required for the Pune Municipal Corporation in the year 2023-2024 has been prepared as per the instructions of the Maharashtra State Water Resources Regulatory Authority, Mumbai. In the year 2019, information has been collected by Pune Municipal Corporation through Aadhaar registration and other means and the total population of Pune city was determined as 52,08,444. In the presented water budget for the year 2022-23, the population of the year 2019 is assumed to grow by 2% per annum and the population of 11 newly incorporated villages (292857) and the population of 23 newly incorporated villages (800000) and 5% floating population are assumed in the Municipal Corporation. A total water budget of 20.34 TMC was given for the year 2022-2023 with the signature of the Municipal Commissioner for a population of 69,41,460 with 35% water leakage. But the Water Resources Department had sanctioned 12.41 TMC of water. (Pune Municipal Corporation News)
A population growth of 2% in 2022-2023 is assumed in 2023-24. Accordingly, water has been demanded for the year 2023-24 as 150 LPCD for the 56,37,785 lakhs of Pune city. Also, 23 newly incorporated villages in the Municipal Corporation have been demanded as 70 LPCDs for the population of 816000 and 11 newly incorporated villages as 70 LPCDs for the population of 298714. Commercial (domestic) water consumption within Pune Municipal Corporation limits is 150 LPCD. 107.99 mld. Water quota has been demanded. The water leakage rate is 35% due to the old distribution system within Pune Municipal Corporation limits. To reduce the amount of leakage, work is being done under the 24*7 water supply scheme of Pune Municipal Corporation and the amount of leakage will be reduced to 20% by the year 2024-25. However, according to the annual water budget for July 2023 to June 2024 submitted by the Pune Municipal Corporation, the water quota of the city of Pune should be accepted and water payments should be made accordingly. This is what the municipal corporation has said in the proposal.
