Suresh Kalmadi – (The Karbhari News Service) – पुण्याचे माजी खासदार, माजी केंद्रीय रेल्वे राज्यमंत्री आणि भारतीय ऑलिम्पिक महासंघाचे माजी अध्यक्ष सुरेश कलमाडी (वय ८१) यांचे आज मंगळवार दि. ६ जाने रोजी पहाटे ३.३० वाजता पुण्यात दीर्घ आजारानंतर दुखःद निधन झाले. त्यांच्या पश्चात पत्नी, विवाहित मुलगा, सून, दोन विवाहित मुली, जावई, नातवंडे असा परिवार आहे. श्रद्धांजली सभा शुक्रवार ९ जानेवारी रोजी सायं. ४.३० ते ६.०० या वेळेत पुना क्लब अॅम्पीथिएटर येथे होईल.
सुरेश कलमाडी पुण्यातील सेंट-व्हिनसेंट शाळा आणि पुढे खडकवासला येथील नॅशनल डिफेन्स अॅकेडमी येथील पदवी शिक्षण पूर्ण करून भारतीय हवाई दलात वैमानिक म्हणून दाखल झाले. १९७१ च्या भारत-पाकिस्तान युद्धात ते सहभागी होते.
१९८२ मध्ये ते प्रथम राज्यसभेचे खासदार बनले. त्यानंतर १९८८, १९९४, १९९८ असे ४ वेळा ते राज्यसभेचे खासदार बनले. यासोबतच १९९६, २००४, २००९ मध्ये असे ३ वेळा ते पुणे लोकसभा मतदार संघातून कॉंग्रेस खासदार म्हणून विजयी झाले.
१९९५ ते १९९६ पर्यंत पंतप्रधान पी. व्ही. नरसिंहराव यांच्या मंत्रिमंडळात ते केंद्रीय रेल्वे राज्यमंत्री बनले. या काळात रेल्वेची पुणे डिव्हिजन त्यांनी तयार केली व असंख्य लांबपल्ल्याच्या रेल्वे त्यांनी पुण्याहून सुरु केल्या. संसदेत रेल्वेचे अंदाजपत्रक मांडणारे ते एकमेव रेल्वे राज्यमंत्री होते.
कॉंग्रेस संसदीय पक्षाचे २००३-२००४ या काळात ते खजिनदारही होते. तसेच २००५ नंतर कॉंग्रेस संसदीय पक्षाचे ते सेक्रेटरी बनले.
हवाई उड्डाण, क्रीडा, संस्कृती, पर्यटन, पर्यावरण संरक्षण, कला आणि विज्ञान व तंत्रज्ञान हे त्यांचे आवडीचे व जिव्हाळ्याचे विषय होते. संसदेच्या विविध समित्यांचे सदस्य म्हणून त्यांनी प्रभावीपणे काम केले.
भारतीय ऑलिम्पिक महासंघाचे १९९६ पासून तब्बल १६ वर्ष ते अध्यक्ष होते. तसेच एशियन अॅथलेटिक्स असोसिएशनचे ते २००० पासून अध्यक्ष होते. याआधी १९८७ पासून अॅथलेटिक्स फेडरेशन ऑफ इंडियाचे ते अध्यक्ष होते. २००८ मध्ये पुण्यात राष्ट्रकुल युवा क्रीडा स्पर्धा आणि २०१० मध्ये नवी दिल्लीत राष्ट्रकुल क्रीडा स्पर्धांचे त्यांनी भव्यतेने यशस्वी आयोजन केले. याशिवाय पुणे, बँगलोर, मणिपूर, पंजाब, हैदराबाद, गोहत्ती आणि झारखंड येथे राष्ट्रीय क्रीडा स्पर्धांचे आयोजन आणि २००३ मध्ये अॅफ्रो-एशियन गेम्स यांचे त्यांनी यशस्वी आयोजन केले. देशात त्यांनी अॅथलेटिक्स क्रीडा संस्कृती रुजवली आणि हजारो तरुण खेळाडू पुढे आणण्यात मोलाचे योगदान दिले.
पुणे शहराचा विकास हा त्यांचा ध्यास होता. बालेवाडी-म्हाळुंगे येथील श्री. शिवछत्रपती क्रीडानगरीची उभारणी, पुण्याला आय. टी. सिटी बनविणे याबरोबरच विद्येचे माहेरघर व सांस्कृतिक राजधानी असणारे पुणे उद्योगनगरी, क्रीडानगरी, आय. टी. बी.टी. सिटी, उद्याननगरी, पर्यटननगरी, ऑटो हब आणि महोत्सवांचे शहर बनविण्यात त्यांनी फार मोठे योगदान दिले. ‘अॅडव्हेंटेज पुणे’ सारख्या आंतरराष्ट्रीय परिषदांचे आयोजन करून पुण्यात फार मोठ्या प्रमाणात राष्ट्रीय व आंतरराष्ट्रीय गुंतवणूक आणण्यात त्यांनी फार मोठे योगदान दिले. तसेच पुण्यात मेट्रो प्रकल्प व्हावा यासाठी सन २००४ पासून २०१३ पर्यंत अथक प्रयत्न केले.
१९८९ मध्ये महाराष्ट्र पर्यटन विकास महामंडळाचे अध्यक्ष असताना पुणे फेस्टिवल हा भव्य सांस्कृतिक महोत्सव त्यांनी सुरु केला. १९८३ मध्ये देशातील पहिली पुणे आंतरराष्ट्रीय मॅरेथॉन सुरु केली. यंदा त्यास ३९ वर्ष पूर्ण झाली असून त्यांनी सुरु केलेला पुणे आंतरराष्ट्रीय चित्रपट महोत्सव यंदा दिमाखात २४ वे वर्ष साजरे करीत आहे.
पुण्याला त्यांनी आंतरराष्ट्रीय नकाशावर लिहिले. तसेच पुणे हा ‘ब्रँड’ विविध उपक्रमांतून त्यांनी जगभर नेला. प्रशस्त सिमेंटचे रस्ते, सुशोभीत चौक, सिंक्रोनाईज्ड सिग्नल सिस्टीम, पुरेशा दाबाने शुद्ध पाणीपुरवठा, झोपडपट्ट्यांचे पुनर्वसन, कचरा व सांडपाणी विल्हेवाट, उद्याने व नाट्यगृहांमध्ये भर, जैव-विविध्य उद्यानांचे संवर्धन, टेकड्यांचे संरक्षण, जॉगिंग ट्रॅक व व्यायामशाळा, सार्वजनिक स्वच्छतागृहांमध्ये भर, बससेवेत सुधारणा, विमानतळ व रेल्वे स्टेशनचे विस्तारीकरण व आधुनिकीकरण, गरिबांसाठी चांगली आरोग्य सेवा, सुरक्षित पुणे अशा प्रत्येक बाबतीत बारकाईने लक्ष देऊन त्यांनी पुण्याच्या विकासाला दिशा आणि गती दिली. पुण्याच्या विकासासाठी २००८ मध्ये त्यांनी केंद्र सरकार कडून तब्बल २५०० कोटी रुपये विकासनिधी मिळविला. यासोबतच पुणे हे धार्मिक सलोख्याचे शहर राहील याची त्यांनी सदैव काळजी घेतली. या सर्वातूनच सन १९९२ पासून त्यांनी पुण्याच्या विकासाचा सुवर्णकाळ निर्माण केला.

Senior Leader Suresh Kalmadi Passes Away
Former Member of Parliament from Pune, former Union Minister of State for railways, and former President of the Indian Olympic Association, Mr. Suresh Kalmadi (aged 81), passed away in Pune today on Tuesday , 6th January at 3.30 am after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife, a married son, daughter-in-law, two married daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren.
The obituary meet will be held on Friday, 9th Jan 4.30 to 6 p.m. at Poona club amphitheatre.
Suresh Kalmadi completed his education at St. Vincent’s School in Pune and later at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. He joined the Indian Air Force as a pilot. He participated in 1971 Indo-Pak war.
In 1982, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time. He went on to serve as a Rajya Sabha Member four times—in 1982, 1988, 1994, and 1998. Additionally, he was elected three times as a Congress Member of Parliament from the Pune Lok Sabha constituency—in 1996, 2004, and 2009.
From 1995 to 1996, he served as Union Minister of State for Railways in the cabinet of Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. During this tenure, he established the Pune Railway Division and initiated several long-distance train services from Pune. He remains the only Minister of State for Railways to have presented the Railway Budget in Parliament.
He also served as Treasurer of the Congress Parliamentary Party from 2003 to 2004 and later became its Secretary after 2005.
Aviation, sports, culture, tourism, environmental conservation, arts, and science and technology were subjects close to his heart. As a Member of Parliament, he worked effectively as a member of various parliamentary committees.
He served as President of the Indian Olympic Association for an uninterrupted 16 years from 1996. He was President of the Asian Athletics Association from 2000 and earlier served as President of the Athletics Federation of India from 1987 to 2005. Under his leadership, the Commonwealth Youth Games were successfully hosted in Pune in 2008, and the Commonwealth Games were grandly organized in New Delhi in 2010. He also successfully organized National Games in Pune, Bengaluru, Manipur, Punjab, Hyderabad, Guwahati, and Jharkhand, as well as the Afro-Asian Games in 2003. He played a pivotal role in nurturing athletics culture in India and in bringing forward thousands of young athletes.
The development of Pune city was his lifelong mission. The construction of the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Balewadi–Mhalunge, transforming Pune into an IT city, and shaping it into an industrial hub, sports city, IT-BT city, garden city, tourism city, auto hub, and a city of festivals were among his major contributions. Through international conferences such as ‘Advantage Pune’, he brought significant national and international investment to the city. From 2004 to 2013, through relentless efforts, he secured approval for the Pune Metro project.
In 1989, while serving as Chairman of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, he initiated the Pune Festival, a grand cultural celebration. In 1983, he launched India’s first Pune International Marathon, which has now completed 39 years. The Pune International Film Festival founded by him is celebrating its 24th year this year with great pride.
He placed Pune prominently on the international map and carried the ‘Pune Brand’ across the world through diverse initiatives. Cement concrete roads, beautified intersections, synchronized signal systems, assured clean water supply, slum rehabilitation, solid waste and sewage management, expansion of gardens and theatres, conservation of biodiversity parks, protection of hills, jogging tracks and gyms, public sanitation facilities, improved bus services, expansion and modernization of the airport and railway stations, quality healthcare for the underprivileged, and a safer Pune—he paid meticulous attention to every aspect of urban development and provided direction and momentum to Pune’s growth. In 2008, he secured development funds amounting to ₹2,500 crore from the Central Government for Pune’s development. Alongside development, he consistently ensured that Pune remained a city of religious harmony. From 1992 onwards, these efforts together created a golden era of development for Pune.
